Where the idea started
The clearest historical root of Western numerology traces back to Pythagoras, the 6th century BCE Greek philosopher and mathematician best known today for his geometry theorem. Pythagoras and his followers believed numbers weren't just tools for counting — they held that reality itself was fundamentally mathematical, and that specific numbers carried inherent qualities and meaning beyond their use in arithmetic. This school of thought is the direct ancestor of what's now called Pythagorean numerology.
A separate but related tradition, Gematria, developed within Jewish mysticism and assigns numerical values to Hebrew letters, allowing words and names to be reduced to a number and interpreted symbolically — a similar underlying idea, arrived at independently. How the number is actually calculated

To find a name's number, each letter is converted to its digit, all the digits are added together, and if the sum is more than one digit, those digits are added again — repeating until a single digit from 1 to 9 remains.
