EveryNameMeaning is a free, independent reference for the meaning, origin, pronunciation and popularity of names — for babies and for pets. We built it because most naming resources online either bury a real answer under ads and slideshows, or repeat the same one-line definition without any context on where a name actually comes from.

Every entry on this site is written in plain language from real research into etymology, historical usage and naming records, rather than scraped wholesale from a single database. Where we show popularity history, it's drawn from public birth-registration data so you can see how a name has actually trended over time, not just a guess.

What we believe

• A name's meaning should be easy to find and free to look up — no signup, no paywall.
• Context matters more than a one-line definition. We try to explain where a name actually comes from.
• Data should be sourced honestly. We say when something is well-documented and when it's a common but less certain interpretation.
